I am through and through a New Yorker.  I love the Yankees and count the late, great Catcher Yogi Berra as the greatest philosopher of the 20th century.  New York is diverse from cosmopolitan Manhattan to Buffalo, home of chicken wings and is populated with wonderful people.  I have worked in New York politics in and around the State Capitol for more than 25 years and love its heroes and villains, prophets and naysayers.

But this week something happened that made me lower my head in shame.  Governor Andrew Cuomo and his Democrat Party passed the most abhorrent abortion legislation in the history of our nation.  Mr. Cuomo and the sycophants of his party in the New York State Legislature joined the likes of North Korea in permitting abortions known as partial-birth abortion to be legal in our state.

While this legislation is beyond words in the barbaric nature of its contents, it is no surprise to many of us in New York that Andrew Cuomo, the son of the late Governor Mario Cuomo would be the person who perpetrated this heinous policy on all New Yorkers.  For it was Mario Cuomo, who went to Notre Dame in the 1980s and said it was alright to be Catholic and be pro-abortion.

Imagine, a politician going to a University named after Our Lady, who bore the Son of God, to advocate for the killing of innocent children waiting to be born for political expediency. Cuomo, the son, lit a bridge pink that he named after his late father to “celebrate” the passing of this monstrosity of abortion legislation.  Fitting, I guess to honor the godfather of abortion politics whose wrongheaded thinking gave us the likes of other Catholics like Biden, Pelosi, et al, who believe it’s ok to say you’re Catholic but advocate for the killing of unborn children.

The legacy of Mario Cuomo’s political gambit to appease the extreme Left of his party on abortion has given us politicians like his son. The younger Cuomo once said that New York is not a place for people who describe themselves as pro-life.  He also infamously said about Republicans in New York:

“Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves. Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.”

This hateful and spiteful comment reveals the soul of Andrew (Andy) Cuomo.

Cuomo’s and the Democrats rationale for passing this bill is that they wanted to codify the so-called protections enshrined in the Roe vs. Wade decision.  However, the bill goes further than current abortion federal law by allowing nondoctors to perform abortions and allowing for partial-birth abortions to be performed. (You’ve heard of that, haven’t you? You know, when the baby is already passed outside the mother, and someone sticks a pair of scissors through its spine?).

While many parts of the country have embraced new technologies like 3D Ultrasounds that reveal the humanity of our pre-born sisters and brothers, Mr. Cuomo and his fellow abortionists ignore science, ignore the facts, and say, ‘Let’s kill unborn children who are living, breathing outside their mother’s womb!” And let’s celebrate it!

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, like his fellow NY bishops, has described the legislation as being just so awful!  When asked about excommunicating the Catholic governor making murder lawful, his Excellency refuses to make excommunication a “weapon.”  Who the hell called it a ‘weapon’? No one I know! He’s calling it a ‘weapon’ as an excuse not to do what Cuomo’s legislation demands any bishop do: make public the reality of Cuomo’s self-excommunication from the Church.

My Bishop, the Most Rev. Edward Scharfenberger, has spoken clearly and sharply, calling it Cuomo’s “Death Star.” He warned the Governor that he is separating himself from the Church. Thousands of Catholics have called for Cuomo to be publically excommunicated.

However, it’s ‘High Noon’ time for  Canon 915. One of the bishops needs to walk down 5th Avenue and face the legion of pro-abortion media, churchman, Democrats, and feminists who would let loose a hail of verbal barbs at the invocation of Canon 915. Far from it being a ‘weapon,’ it would be an “act of Mercy” for Cuomo to face the gravity of his actions.

Ultimately, it will probably be Cardinal Dolan who has to make this decision because Cuomo lives in the Archdiocese of New York.  I respectfully suggest that Cardinal Dolan review some of the press clippings of his predecessor John Cardinal O’Connor who was a frequent interlocutor of Mario Cuomo on the issue of abortion to see how to handle this situation.

With all this said I could tell you that the pro-life movement is alive and well in New York. The pro-life movement started here after then Governor Rockefeller ushered in abortion laws that pre-dated Roe.  Pro-Life advocates will exercise the only option that will turn this horror into hope with the work of building a culture of life by winning the hearts of our young people who see first-hand the ravages of what a “throwaway culture” has done to them and their contemporaries.

Will the bishops forsake us in this hour of need? “Oh, don’t forsake me…..”
